          What Is The DARE Program?
The "Drug Abuse Resistance Education" Program (D.A.R.E) began in 1983 in Los Angeles, California. DARE is a nine week series of classroom lessons, taught by a specially trained law enforcement officer. Fifth grade students learn the skills needed to resist negative peer pressure and lead successful drug free and violence free lives. DARE is now in eighty percent of our nation's school districts and in more than fourty-four countries around the world. The program basically teaches the dangers that drug use can bring. It also teaches how to avoid drugs and other things such as peer pressure.
          Van Wert County DARE Officer
The Van Wert County Sheriff's Office began the DARE program in the fall of 1994 at Crestview. Deputy Keith Allen was trained in Fort Wayne, Indiana during the summer of 1994 which consisted of two weeks of training. Each year, Deputy Allen attends the DARE retrainer, additional classes, which reinforce the training already received. The Van Wert County Sheriff's Office in cooperation with Lincolnview, Crestview, St. Mary's of the Assumption, and The Marsh Foundation Schools have a good working relationship. Deputy Allen also visits the K-4th grades and talks on child safety and staying drug free.
          DARE Graduation
To be a DARE graduate, students need to: complete their planner, write a 200 word essay, be drug free, have a good attitude, and work with their partners and teams. On graduation day, all the graduates receive a DARE Tshirt, which is donated by: The Middle Point Lions Club, The Convoy Lions Club, The Venedocia Lions Club, The Ohio City Fire Office, and The Knights of Columbus. Graduates also receive certificates from the Attorney Generals Office and one from Deputy Allen. They receive Graduation pins, and other DARE graduate items. The essays are judged and the winner from each class reads his or her essay at the graduation. For winning the essay contest, they receive a medal and a free airplane ride provided by Fred Fisher of Van Wert. All items that the students receive during class are made possible from donations and fundraisers throughout the year.
